Cercy- la Tour - Pilgrimage to the Virgin Mary on the Hill

The

Virgin Mary statue situated above the town of Cercy de la Tour.

We thought we would take the trek up the hill to this beautiful statue (Gerry, Simone and Carolyn).  Once we saw the hill we questioned our sanity but soldiered on and made the top in no time.  There was a beautiful cathedral at the summit and a gate to the statue of the Virgin Mary.  And another Boulangerie!!!  We were relieved for the paysans because there was one at the bottom which could be accessed by them only on the steep treacherous path we were on.
Of course the bakery was closed as well as the butcher - because it was Tuesday!!

Our challenging path!

La Rue d'Aron - The path we were on was the main entrance to the town in the Middle Ages and was once steps.  The name they gave it was:  Casse Cou - or breakneck!  The town was at the top with most of the commerce  and was protected by Ramparts - some still standing surrounding the statue.   With the arrival of the Chemin de fer  (train) in 1866 the merchants lost some business and some moved down the hill.
